LifeSTEP Program

The Psychology Clinic has established a community service agency that provides undergraduate life skills trainers (and mentors) to school-aged youth with emotional and/or behavioral problems.  The vast majority of these children are from a minority group living in poverty in Tucson and are struggling with a variety of emotional and behavior problems. 

We are currently accepting applications for the Spring 2018 semester.  As a LifeSTEP (Life Skills Training and Enhancement Program) intern, you would be meeting with your assigned youth about once a week for about 4 hours each time. Activities might include going to the movies, getting an ice cream, going bowling or spending time at a park, etc (you would be reimbursed for your expenses including gas).  You would receive 3 units of internship credit (393 or 493 depending on your U of A status), and you would have the opportunity to receive training in this area.  

We are especially in need of male interns (due to the high number of older boys in need of a positive male role model) although we have positions for female interns as well.

2 College of Medicine internships for spring 2018 semester

Advantages of an Internship:
An internship can provide you with valuable skills that you can list on your résumé and carry forward into employment. You will make valuable professional contacts and learn how programs operate behind the scenes.
Description:
Office duties: Data entry, typical office duties, event preparation, other duties as assigned.
Professionalism: Candidate will be working with physicians, resident trainees, program leadership and staff.
Goals: Candidate will learn medical terminology, how medical education programs operate, the role of physicians in hospitals, clinics, and as faculty. Candidate will learn or strengthen knowledge of software, human resources practices and health care systems.
Hours: A 3-unit internship is 135 hours over the course of the semester. This is about 10 hours per week.
Location: College of Medicine
Semester available: Prefer academic year commitment (fall 2017 & spring 2018). Summer available.
Positions:  Two. One will be in Pediatrics (flexible hours), one will be in the Clerkship Office (afternoon hours– days flexible). All 9 hours/ week.

Chest Compression CPR Training

Dear Students,

We are a group of medical students at the University of Arizona-College of Medicine and we are conducting a research project to compare two different methods of teaching continuous chest compression only CPR.

Who are we looking for? Individuals with little or no previous CPR experience.

What we will be doing? We are comparing two teaching methods so each participant will be randomly placed in the control group or the experimental group the day of the training and it will take approximately 1-1.5 hours of your time. You will be given a pre-test, then training in continuous chest compression only-CPR, and then a post-test. 

When? We have four different blocks of time available on Sunday, November 19, 2017.

            1^ST: 10:00AM-11:30AM

            2^nd: 10:30AM-12:00PM

            3^rd: 11:30AM-1:00PM

            4^th: 12:00PM-1:30PM

Where? We will be conducting the research at the College of Medicine campus, next to the Banner University Medical Center.

Public Health has opened enrollment for several of our popular courses to students from ANY major (this open enrollment is during the spring term only; the courses remain restricted to public health students during the fall term). Feel free to share with students you think may be interested.
