Two Internship Experiences to offer students for 2017

The Pre-Health Professions Advising Center is pleased to announce that we have two internship experiences to offer students for 2017, the Med Mentor Internship and the Patient Experience Internship.
These are different types of internships intended for students at different stages of preparing for application to health professional programs, so please review the descriptions below (and online via links provided) and apply for the ONE that will be best for you:

MED MENTOR INTERNSHIP (16 Students)
Designed for students who intend to apply to Medical School (MD/DO) for the 2018 Cycle, so is only available to Juniors, Seniors and post-baccalaureate students.  In its 10th year, this internship involves a learning component, weekly class meetings and also shadowing opportunities with physicians. Look here for more information: http://clas.arizona.edu/event/pre-health-professions/med-mentor-internship-2017

PATIENT EXPERIENCE (PX) INTERNSHIP (25 Students)
Open to students in any career path although because of the total hour commitment, particularly helpful for students planning to become PA’s.  This is a great opportunity to become familiar with the hospital environment and interacting primarily with patients, but also with the providers in the unit.  Requires a two semester commitment:  Spring, 2017 and Fall, 2017 (not summer) and a total of 270 patient contact hours.  IF you will graduate in May or August of 2017, please do not apply for this internship.  Please note that we will offer a summer version of this class (3 units, 135 hours) in summer, 2017.  Look here for more information about the PX internship: http://clas.arizona.edu/event/pre-health-profession/patient-experience-intern-program-2017-application

Part time female Caregiver needed

I am a quadriplegic and professor at the U of A. This is a great job for pre-med or nursing students since you get lots of hands on clinical experience in a relaxed environment. I must admit I write several letters of recommendation a year for my gals going on to med school, nursing school, PA school and they get in.  There are four hour shifts in the morning (8am-12pm) and three hours shifts in the evening (5:30-8:30) available. Some caregiving experience recommended, although I do intensive training for my needs. Must have a car. I am flexible and will work with your schedule. Near Speedway and Alvernon. Please call 520-419-5924.  Do not send a text message.

SHAC

APPLICATION FOR FALL 2016 MEMBERSHIP

PACKET

We accept students from all majors and do not discriminate based on culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, politics, religion, disability or ethnicity.

Dear Applicant,
The University of Arizona Student Health Advocacy Committee (SHAC) is an ASUA and Campus Health supported, policy-and program-driven organization that serves to advocate preventative health issues on campus. The UA Student Health Advocacy Committee serves as a liaison between Campus Health and the student body while working closely together with all health-related organizations and institutions on campus and in our community, such as the Arizona Cancer Center, the Sarver Heart Center, and the College of Public Health. The following application will allow you to show us your motivation and capability to be a member of SHAC.
The application process is competitive; we are looking for members who will contribute to the mission of SHAC to advocate preventative health initiatives. We are looking for candidates that offer various skills and interests including, but not limited to: marketing, fundraising, community outreach, organization, initiative, confidence and leadership, those who have a knack for policy, administration and just have an intense passion to help others.
During the year, all members will be asked to work on the larger projects such as implementing the UA Campus-wide Tobacco-free Policy, Influenza Vaccinations, “Cooking on Campus” classes, giving presentations at local public schools, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Programming, sun safety and sexual health initiatives, and the 11th annual 5K Run/Walk in the Spring. Members will also choose several smaller projects to work on throughout the year, including running our subcommittees and representing the student population in campus-wide decisions in both the Well-U Committee and the Health and Recreation Fee Planning Committee. SHAC’s programs cover a broad range of health promotion topics that maintain awareness for students, faculty, and our community, which is why SHAC holds events in conjunction with other campus groups in addition to our own. We will also hold fundraisers and socials that will help SHAC continue as a cohesive and powerful health advocacy group on campus. Because of our wide range of events and activities, SHAC is a great way for a student of any major, background, or interest to become involved in the health of our campus and community.
Additionally, our members benefit from personal interaction and connections at UA Campus Health, including interaction with doctors, pharmacists and nurses. Our members also benefit from opportunities to shadow at Campus Health and to participate in their important programming. Our members, depending on the programs they are working on, will also be working with members of prestigious institutions such as the College of Public Health, Sarver Heart Center, and the Arizona Cancer Center. Other membership benefits include networking opportunities, free CPR and First-Aid training, as well as Kaplan Test Prep discounts.
Meetings are held every week at the Student Health Advocacy Committee Office Area in ASUA. All members are required to attend these weekly meetings held every Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm; applicants MUST be free at this time.
We hope that you are as excited as we are about this coming year, to make a profound and positive impact on our community. The complete application (resume, schedule, and this document) is
due FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2016 at MIDNIGHT; submitted to the SHAC email address: asuashac@gmail.com Submissions after this time will not be accepted. You will be contacted no later than Tuesday, September 13th via email to inform you if you have been granted an interview, which will be held from 6:00pm-9:00pm in the CSIL Conference Room on Monday, September 19th  and Tuesday, September 20th. After the interview process, the applicants that we see best fit for the positions will be notified by email. We will make every attempt to inform each applicant of his or her status no later than Friday, September 23rd.

Outreach Project

Are you interested in working on an outreach project to explain how vision works to students and the public through personal outreach and social media?

Are you interested in learning more about the way your eyes send visual information to the brain?

Dr. Erika Eggers is looking for a group of undergraduates to be part of a new NSF Outreach program. The outreach program is funded by Dr. Eggers’ recent NSF CAREER Award that will study the role and  mechanisms of light adaptation in the retina. Light adaptation is the process that happens when you move from a dark movie theater to bright sunlight and sensitivity is gradually reduced to account for the brighter ambient light. We are looking for students to commit to the first year of this project that will have two main components: Developing an outreach module that can be used at the Tucson Festival of Books in March 2017 and school visits and developing a blog to discuss vision research and the development of this educational module. This will be a team-based project where students may focus on subsets of the total project.  It would be appropriate for independent study credit or an honors project for a senior undergraduate.  All students will be required to present the developed module at the Tucson festival of books March 11-12, which is the first weekend of spring break.  If you are interested, please send a statement about what interests you about this project, a resume/CV and an informal copy of your transcript to Dr. Erika Eggers, eeggers@u.arizona.  If you are interested in learning more about the Eggers laboratory please see http://eggerslab.sites.arizona.edu/.

Elder Rehab at the Jewish Community Center (JCC)

Elder Rehab at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) is entering its fourth
semester in September,  2016, with 30 enrolled memory-impaired senior
adults. (See attached flyer.)

I anticipate needing about 25 new interns or volunteers, each of whom
will be matched with a memory-impaired senior and provide their  partner
with 20 2-hour "personal training" sessions per semester. Each session
will consist of one hour of physical exercise and one hour of memory-
and language stimulation activities and games.

In addition to the 40 hours of "hands on" service, students will be expected
to attend two training sessions plus 2 social events and possibly assist with the
orientation of new students or seniors. They will record each session's
output on printed forms and write a final report culled from the session
reports. They will also complete a quiz based on a reading about Alzheimer's Disease
or another rehab-related topic. There will be ample opportunity to contribute
the 45 hours of service required for one internship or independent study credit.

Applicants will be selected on a first come, first served basis, with
preference given to students committing to two semesters (fall 2016 and
spring 2017).

Interested students should complete the attached application form and
return it to me as soon as possible.
Two session times (on non-consecutive days) will be worked out between each
student and his or her partner's caregiver from among the following time
periods:

Mondays Wednesdays or Fridays between 3 and 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday mornings between 10 and 12.

Program will begin the week of September 19, with a "meet your
partner"social on Saturday Sept. 17, from 3-5 p.m. at the JCC and a training session
from 1-3 that same Saturday.

The JCC is located at 3800 E. River Road, intersection of Dodge.
