Internship Opportunity

Dear Future Medical Students,

Students expecting to have a gap year between graduation and medical school, this internship opportunity is for you!  I am currently employed at The Hand Center, P.C. working as an orthopedic intern.  It is a yearlong, full time, and paid internship in Phoenix, AZ.  During my past eight months of employment, I have gained more medical experience than I thought possible.  Working here has provided me with an excellent opportunity to improve my Spanish in a clinical setting.  Proficiency in Spanish is incredibly helpful and recommended for this position.
For the past 16 years, interns have described this internship as the best year of their training toward a professional degree.  You will be working directly with doctors Mitchel and Carter Lipton, orthopedic hand surgeons, assisting with patient care in every step of the visit.  This position includes helping the doctors with in-office procedures, such as tendon repairs, steroid injections, setting fractures, and wound suturing.  You will obtain detailed histories, evaluate patients, and present them to the doctors as you would in medical school and residency programs.  You will also learn the business and logistics behind operating a private practice by communicating with insurance, workman compensation, and other healthcare organizations.  In addition, this office features a hand surgery rehab department where you can work directly with an occupational therapist. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge to gain over the course of this internship and it has challenged me to grow both academically and personally.  I firmly believe that my time here and the strong recommendation from Dr. Lipton greatly contributed to my acceptance to the University of Arizona College of Medicine for this coming fall.  I guarantee that you will find this work environment inviting and fun and you will finish the year with a true sense of accomplishment.  We wish you the best of luck in applying for the internship. Please email: Mitchel Lipton M.D. at handdok@aol.com with your CV and current transcript.  If you have any questions about the position or my experience feel free to email me at lindseypedvin@yahoo.comFurther information can also be found on Wildcat Joblink (http://www.career.arizona.edu/student) under job title: Orthopedic Assistant (Pre-Medical School Intern).

Thanks!

Paid Summer Internship Opportunity

Occupational Health Internship Program: Gain Hands-On Experience with Workplace Safety & Health Issues
Internship Dates: June 13 - August 12, 2016
Deadline to Apply:
Friday, February 19, 2016 (Applicants Notified by mid/late March)
Organization Description
The Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP) is a national summer program dedicated to help students learn about the field of occupational safety and health (OSH) from those most at stake: working people. Since 2004, OHIP has played a key role in training, mentoring, and inspiring a new generation of OSH professionals to prevent job injury and disease through partnerships with worker and community based organizations. A project of the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC), OHIP has training sites in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans and our newest sites in Lincoln, NE, Metro Washington, DC/Maryland area, and Ardmore, OK. New sites may be announced. Our 2015 projects included the investigation of musculoskeletal disorders and other H&S concerns among hotel housekeepers, the examination of workplace H&S issues among immigrant workers in the dairy agriculture industry, the investigation of OHS hazards of temporary work in manufacturing and warehouse settings, and the investigation of Latino immigrant workers’ conditions in SE Louisiana shipyards.
Position Description
Teams of two students are placed with a union or worker organization to investigate job-related health and safety problems among workers, often employed in an under-served or a high hazard job. Projects are designed to maximize interaction between workers and students. OHIP is an applied research experience, where students learn about the OSH field from the workers’ perspective. Project work emphasizes worker interviews and worksite evaluations. At the end of the project, teams provide a “give back” product to the workers and their
host union/worker organization, present their project at a national NIOSH videoconference, and produce a final report. Commitment is full-time, including possible evenings or weekends.
Qualifications
Graduate and undergraduate students can apply; some stipends are restricted to US citizens. Non-US citizens must supply documentation of permission to work in the US. Undergraduates must have completed two years, preferably in a field related to public health, environmental studies, or public policy. Graduate students in public health, medicine, nursing, or a related field are encouraged to apply. Recent graduates cannot be out of school for more than six months prior to the start of OHIP (i.e. students are not eligible if they graduated prior to
December of 2015). We are looking for students with experience or interest in working with unions or social justice organizations, are organized and self-starting, have good team skills and ideally speak a second language such as Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese, etc. We encourage underrepresented minority students to apply.
Compensation
Undergraduate Students = $4,000 stipend
Graduate Students = $5,200 stipend

Global Medical Brigades

Global Brigades is the largest, student-led sustainable organization in the world. Here at the University of Arizona we have several distinctions of Global Brigades, medical being one of them. Medical brigade volunteers set up clinics in rural communities in either Honduras, Panamá and Nicaragua to provide health care where access is limited. Brigaders are given the opportunity to shadow licensed health care professionals while learning about cultures abroad. A typical Medical Brigade clinic consists of six stations: Intake, Triage, Consultation, Dental, Charla (health education), and Pharmacy. For every student who volunteers on a brigade, sixty patients can see a doctor who otherwise would not be able to. We currently have vacant spots on one of our brigades-Nicaragua in the beginning of summer.

If you are interested in joining Global Medical Brigades or traveling with us, email our secretary, Esmeralda Carrasco, at ua.gmb.secretary@gmail.com for questions or further instructions.
