Student involvement in the Arizona RETINA project

Are you interested in learning how to write and talk about science to the public in person and on social media?  Are you interested in learning more about vision and your eyes?

Dr. Erika Eggers is looking for a group of undergraduates to be part of the fifth year of the Arizona RETINA Project (Researchers Educating Tucson in Natural-Light Adaptation) - an NSF Outreach program.  You can view some of the results of the previous years of our program on our blog, here: http://azretina.sites.arizona.edu/blogs

The outreach program is funded by Dr. Eggers’ NSF CAREER Award that investigates the role and mechanisms of light adaptation in the retina. Light adaptation is the process that happens when you move from a dark movie theater to bright sunlight and sensitivity is gradually reduced to account for the brighter ambient light.

We are looking for students to commit to the fourth year of this project that will have two main components: Developing and refining an outreach module that can be used at the Tucson Festival of Books in March 2021 and school visits and developing a blog to discuss vision research and the development of this educational module. This will be a team-based project where students may focus on subsets of the total project. It would be appropriate for independent study credit. All students will be required to present the developed module at the Tucson festival of books in March 2021 (dates TBA).

If you are interested, please send 1- a statement about what interests you about this project, 2- a resume/CV and 3- an informal copy of your transcript to Dr. Erika Eggers, eeggers@arizona.edu.  Review of materials will begin July 6. Given the current situation of UA operating online interviews will be done through Zoom. If you are interested in learning more about the Eggers laboratory, please see http://eggerslab.sites.arizona.edu/.
