Internship Opportunity

One Year Full Time Orthopedic Hand Surgery Paid Internship Opportunity for Gap Year Students

A year spent working in a clinical setting before matriculating to medical school can give applicants valuable insight into the field of medicine. The Hand Center in Phoenix, AZ, offers a unique year long, full time (40 hours a week) paid internship to pre-medical students looking to gain experience and strengthen their medical school applications. This program has been in place for 20 years and has helped dozens of students in the past pursue careers in medicine. It involves working directly with two orthopedic hand surgeons to deliver care to a diverse group of patients from various parts of Arizona.

This past year due to the pandemic, a significant portion of the patients have been seen via telemedicine using Zoom platform.  We anticipate over the course of 2021 a gradual return to our more typical activity, which includes the following:

~ You will be working directly with Dr. Mitchel and Carter Lipton, orthopedic hand surgeons.
~ You will help them directly with in-office surgeries, which include tendon repairs, setting fractures and exploring wounds.
~ You will evaluate patients and review them with the doctor.
~ You will help the hand therapist in the post-operative rehabilitation of patients.

~ You will have the opportunity to observe surgeries in the operating room (once bringing observers is allowed and appropriate in the operating room)
~ You will also act as a liaison between physician and the hospital staff, insurance companies and attorneys.
~ Over the course of the internship, you will not only improve your medical knowledge, but will also gain experience in dealing with injured patients.

* A significant portion of our patient population speaks Spanish as their primary language so some working knowledge of Spanish is desirable..

Please email: Mitchel Lipton, M.D. at handdok@aol.com with your resume.
