Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) Workshop


The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) provides students interested in health careers the opportunity for a transformative summer experience.  SHPEP connects opportunity with student success. The FREE six-week summer enrichment program helps college students enhance their academic proficiency and career development opportunities in a health profession. Participation in the summer enrichment program may better position students for acceptance into advanced degree programs.

To be eligible, you must:
Eligibility Requirements
All students who meet the Summer Health Professions Education Program eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply. Applicants must meet the following requirements:
ü  Must be a high school graduate and currently enrolled as a freshman or sophomore in college.
ü  Have a minimum overall college GPA of 2.5.
ü  Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident, or an individual granted deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
ü  Must not have previously participated in the program.
Other factors for consideration include that a student:
ü Identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in the health professions;
ü Comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background; and/or
ü Has demonstrated an interest in issues affecting underserved populations.
ü Submits a compelling personal statement and a strong letter of recommendation.
Applications for the 2020 summer program will open on November 1, 2016 and close on February 5.

SHPEP is implemented at 12 universities across the nation. Each institution provides scholars with academic enrichment in the basic sciences and math, clinical experiences, career development activities, learning and study skills seminars, and a financial planning workshop. Program sites vary on how they deliver each of these required components and their program start date.
