Attached is information regarding a scholarship available for undergraduate physiology and pre- physiology students who meet the stated eligibility requirements.

Anne E. (Betty) Atwater Scholarship

for Undergraduate Education in the Department of Physiology

2019-20 Scholarship Announcement

A gift from Professor Emerita Anne E. (Betty) Atwater, a faculty member at the University of Arizona for 34 years and Director of the Physiology Undergraduate Program before her retirement in 2003.

Award Amount:  $1,000  (non-renewable)

Eligibility:

·         Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident

·         Must be an undergraduate student who will enroll full-time at the University of Arizona as a physiology (or pre-physiology) major for the 2019-20 academic year.

·         Must have completed a two-semester “Anatomy and Physiology” course sequence (e.g., PSIO 201 and 202 or equivalent) with grades of C or higher, as required for admission to the physiology major

·         Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher

·         Must have completed the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA)

Note:  Merit is the primary consideration for this scholarship with financial need as secondary

Selection Process:

The Department of Physiology Scholarship Committee will select the winner of this scholarship.  The scholarship winner will be notified in late June or by mid-July.

Scholarships for PSIO Students

The Mortar Board National Senior Honor Society is offering two scholarships to undergraduate UA students. Below are the descriptions and documents for each scholarship. If you have any questions you can email Izzie Jado, the Mortar Board scholarship chair, at ua.mortarboard.scholar@gmail.com.

Jody Winn-Oden Memorial Scholarship: Any current UA junior pursuing a pre-health curriculum (i.e. pre: medicine, nursing, dental, optometry, etc.) via any major or are currently in the nursing school are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Junior standing is defined as having completed >60 units, and not graduating in May 2019. Selection will be based upon the availability to convey outstanding character, leadership, and service, as well as the display of sincere dedication to the medical and healthcare profession. The award will amount to $400.

Mortar Board Scholarship: Established in 1983, the scholarship is awarded annually to an individual who most exemplifies the qualities that Mortar Board demands of its own members; namely, outstanding scholarship, leadership, and service to both the University of Arizona and the community. All UA students (of any undergraduate major) with sophomore standing are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Sophomore standing is defined as having completed 30 - 60 units. The award will amount to $500.

Fall 2019 LifeSTEP Internship program

The psychology clinic has established a community service agency that provides undergraduate life skills trainers (and mentors) to school-aged youth with emotional and/or behavioral problems. 

The vast majority of these children are from a minority group living in poverty in Tucson and are struggling with a variety of emotional and behavior problems.

We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2019 semester.

  

As a LifeSTEP (Life Skills Training and Enhancement Program) intern, you would be meeting with your assigned youth about once a week for about 4 hours each time. Activities might include going to the movies, getting an ice cream, going bowling or spending time at a park, etc (you would be reimbursed for your expenses including gas).  You would receive 3 units of internship credit (393 or 493 depending on your U of A status), and you would have the opportunity to receive training in this area.

  

We are especially in need of male interns (due to the high number of older boys in need of a positive male role model), and we are also in need of many female interns.
