This
dynamic Study Abroad program is tailored for students who want to: visit more
than one country in Europe, make a short time commitment, earn 6 upper division
credits, meet other students, and travel with a faculty leader. I created
the program and have led it for the past 4 summers.
Each year 18-24 students have
traveled together, become global citizens, learned so much, and made strong
lasting friendships. While the program offers credit for public
health, students from other disciplines have enjoyed the program, too.
Future medical professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, counselors,
PT/OTs, educators, etc.) benefit from this program in many ways. Here are
just a few:
*Introduction to medical systems
in three different countries
*Make lifelong friends
*Personal interactions with
doctors, nurses, pharmacists, researches, scientists, public health
workers, etc.
*Fun engagement in fitness
activities (yoga, circuit training, team building, bicycling, etc.)
*Increased understanding of
human sexuality, love and relationships across the lifespan
*Interaction
with medical professionals working in obstetrics, oncology, and radiology
(Belgium) and clinicians working with sex
workers (Netherlands)
*Enhanced
exposure to and understanding of people who are LGBTQIAA
*Improved confidence and
cross-cultural competency
*Expanded world view
*Opportunity for group host
family dinners with local citizens in each country
Here’s what students said about
the 2018 program:
Really an amazing
experience and well put together program.
It was beyond
amazing!!
This course is full of
experiences I will never forget.
You learn so much and gain
such great insights.
This has truly been the
greatest experience of my life thus far and I'm so thankful to
have had Lee Ann as my guide!
Forever in my heart
<3
It was a once in a
lifetime chance to both travel and expand my knowledge.
I have attached the tentative
schedule. Below is the youtube link for the
2019 video made by one of this year's students:
Students meet for a one week pre-departure orientation with fun
learning activities and international guest speakers at UA’s Drachman Hall (May 13-17). The group will
travel together for 24 days in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark (June
4-27). Students are free to travel before and after the time abroad. We stay in
hotels in five cities and visit at least 6 other cities, mostly by the comfort
and convenience of charter bus.
Students earn 6 units of credit in Human
Sexuality HPS 330 and Special Topics in Public Health-Fitness HPS
459. For more information, trip videos, student blogs, a
descriptive powerpoint (see "links of interest") and
more, please click on the highlighted green link (below my signature) which will take
