APPLICATION FOR FALL 2016 MEMBERSHIP
PACKET
We accept students from all majors and do not
discriminate based on culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, politics,
religion, disability or ethnicity.
Dear Applicant,
The University of Arizona Student
Health Advocacy Committee (SHAC) is an ASUA and Campus Health supported,
policy-and program-driven organization that serves to advocate preventative
health issues on campus. The UA Student Health Advocacy Committee serves as a
liaison between Campus Health and the student body while working closely
together with all health-related organizations and institutions on campus and
in our community, such as the Arizona Cancer Center, the Sarver Heart Center,
and the College of Public Health. The following application will allow you to
show us your motivation and capability to be a member of SHAC.
The application process is
competitive; we are looking for members who will contribute to the mission of
SHAC to advocate preventative health initiatives. We are looking for candidates
that offer various skills and interests including, but not limited to:
marketing, fundraising, community outreach, organization, initiative,
confidence and leadership, those who have a knack for policy, administration
and just have an intense passion to help others.
During the year, all members will be
asked to work on the larger projects such as implementing the UA Campus-wide
Tobacco-free Policy, Influenza Vaccinations, “Cooking on Campus” classes,
giving presentations at local public schools, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR) Programming, sun safety and sexual health initiatives, and the 11th
annual 5K Run/Walk in the Spring. Members will also choose several smaller
projects to work on throughout the year, including running our subcommittees
and representing the student population in campus-wide decisions in both the
Well-U Committee and the Health and Recreation Fee Planning Committee. SHAC’s
programs cover a broad range of health promotion topics that maintain awareness
for students, faculty, and our community, which is why SHAC holds events in
conjunction with other campus groups in addition to our own. We will also hold
fundraisers and socials that will help SHAC continue as a cohesive and powerful
health advocacy group on campus. Because of our wide range of events and
activities, SHAC is a great way for a student of any major, background, or
interest to become involved in the health of our campus and community.
Additionally, our members benefit
from personal interaction and connections at UA Campus Health, including
interaction with doctors, pharmacists and nurses. Our members also benefit from
opportunities to shadow at Campus Health and to participate in their important
programming. Our members, depending on the programs they are working on, will
also be working with members of prestigious institutions such as the College of
Public Health, Sarver Heart Center, and the Arizona Cancer Center. Other
membership benefits include networking opportunities, free CPR and First-Aid
training, as well as Kaplan Test Prep discounts.
Meetings are held every week at the
Student Health Advocacy Committee Office Area in ASUA. All members are required
to attend these weekly meetings held every Wednesday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm; applicants
MUST be free at this time.
We hope that you are as excited as we
are about this coming year, to make a profound and positive impact on our
community. The complete application (resume, schedule, and this
document) is
due FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9,
2016 at MIDNIGHT; submitted to the SHAC email address: asuashac@gmail.com Submissions after this time will not be
accepted. You will be contacted no later than Tuesday, September 13th via email
to inform you if you have been granted an interview, which will be held from
6:00pm-9:00pm in the CSIL Conference Room on Monday, September 19th and Tuesday, September 20th. After
the interview process, the applicants that we see best fit for the positions
will be notified by email. We will make every attempt to inform each applicant
of his or her status no later than Friday, September 23rd.
