Are you a major in the
biological sciences and are looking for a way to share your love of biology
with others,
serve your community, AND
get upper division credit?
Join SORT (STEM
Outreach and Recruitment Team) for Fall 2016 and help K-12
kids,
your fellow undergrads, and
the general public learn about science!
SORT students serve the community by:
- Helping K-12 students and teachers, the general public, and
their fellow undergraduates get excited and learn about science!
- Learning and conducting fun biology demonstrations for
public events (both on and off campus).
- Organize engaging events for fellow college students, such
as lab tours and workshops.
- Helping high school students learn about what studying
science at UA is like.
- Assisting in science outreach and recruitment activities.
- Providing feedback to and/or judging K-12 students’ science
fair ideas and projects.
What do you gain from being in SORT?
- Improvement of your public speaking and presentation
skills, especially in talking about science with different audiences!
- A better understanding of biology by helping others
understand science content.
- The joy of being a role model for young people,
especially those who don’t know anyone who’s gone to college.
- Opportunities to share science with others; SORT students
have the flexibility to choose from a variety of activities in which
to participate over the course of the semester.
- Students in SORT will earn 1 unit
of upper division credit for MCB 397C, spending a grand total of 45 hours
during the semester participating in a combination of the above activities
and attending class meetings. Students will be given a grade of A, B, C,
D, or E, based on their attendance and participation.
To be eligible for SORT, you must:
- Be an UA sophomore, junior, or senior majoring in any
biological science (MCB, Biology, EEB, Biochemistry, Physiology,
Microbiology, Nutritional Sciences, etc.).
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Be able to consistently attend a 50-minute class
meeting (day and time to be determined once all applicants are selected).
- Preferably have basic public speaking skills and be
involved in independent research on campus.
