Representatives from school districts and local nonprofits
will be at the UA Education and Nonprofit Career Day here in the Student Union
Memorial Center Ballroom from 3pm to 6pm on Wednesday, February 17th.
Students majoring in Education, SBS, Business, Science or
even Engineering…this fair potentially has something for them. Students who
take the time to explore the entire Ballroom will find some nonprofit
opportunities in great social service organizations in addition to over 80
school districts and charter schools.
Nonprofit agencies in attendance include: ACCEL, AmeriCorps,
the Diocese of Tucson, Emerge! Center Against Domestic Violence, Teach for
America and Peace Corps.
Whiteboards on each table will explain what that particular
organization is searching for and the potential is across the board. Agencies
and school districts are looking for students from the Colleges of Humanities,
Science, Engineering, Education, Business and Nursing. Several organizations
have indicated they are interested in ALL Majors.
These whiteboards will list an array of opportunities
available within each organization. Schools need accountants and administrators
in addition to teachers and librarians. Conversely Education majors might want
to use their teaching background in an arena outside the classroom. Nonprofits
could provide just that opportunity.
Students who haven’t yet found a job that they are committed
to, might want to consider substitute teaching as a stopgap measure
transitioning from college to full-time employment. With a bachelor’s degree in
any major, students are eligible to substitute teach in the State of Arizona.
This might be a viable interim opportunity while looking for a permanent
position.
As we all know (hopefully!), the educational environment can
be dynamic, innovative and rewarding. One effective way to stay in school
forever is to pursue a career within the educational system. If students are
inclined to consider the classroom school environment as a potential workplace,
the February 17th UA Education and Nonprofit Career Day is an opportunity to
check out the possibilities that might await them in this field.
Please encourage your students to make their way to the
Student Union Memorial Center third floor Ballroom (follow the balloons) on
Wednesday, February 17th, from 3pm to 6pm, and see what the school
districts and nonprofits there have to offer. For a current listing of school
districts and nonprofits attending this event and the types of positions they
are looking for, go to www.career.arizona.edu,
click on “Events” and then the “UA Education and Nonprofit Career Day”.
