MA Program in Rehabilitation & Mental Health Counseling: Preparation of Rehabilitation Counselors for People with Blind and Visual Impairment

AWARD: 7 Scholarships Available, In-State Tuition $6,200 and $1500 in Stipend, For 5 semesters (starting next term – Spring 2016)
ELIGIBILITY: Students must be admitted in the Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program, 2nd year students are welcome to apply, RSA Scholarship Agreement

OTHER INFORMATION: This scholarship requires a Payback of 4 years of work at an RSA site or agency that contracts with RSA (most behavioral health agencies qualify).  There are 9 additional units (B/VI specialty courses) that you must take for this scholarship.  Complete either a practicum or internship at an RSA site.

Any student who may be interested in a Master’s in Rehab & Mental Health Counseling and to work with the Blind and Visually Impaired, the program has a large scholarship opportunity for students who are willing to stay in the field for several years after they graduate. The program coordinator, Phil Johnson (johnsonp@email.arizona.edu) is looking for eligible students to start as soon as January! Are you interested in a career in medicine, dentistry, physician assistant, physical therapy, pharmacy, or other health professions? Learn what it takes to apply to health profession schools, be a successful applicant, and where you can get clinical, research, and volunteer experience.

Rotation 1: MCAT, DAT, GRE, Academics, and Extracurricular
Current Health Professional Students will talk about what they should do during undergrad to enhance their chances of admission. AMCAS/AACOMAS/ADSAS, Secondaries, Personal Statements, and Interviews. Current Health Professional Students will talk about the actual application process including completing Application(s), Secondaries, Personal Statement, and the Interview Process

Rotation 2: Health Professions Admission What are admissions looking for in an applicant?
Panelist will discuss centralized application process (AMCAS, AACOMAS, AADSAS, CASPA, PharmCAS, and others), interviewing, and personal statement.

Rotation 3: Getting to Know Faculty, Letters of Recommendation, and Research Experience Professors will be advising students on how to develop rapport with faculty, getting stellar letter of recommendation, and seeking research experience.

Rotation 4: Getting Clinical/Volunteer Experience Local clinical and volunteer agencies will discuss how to get involved in their organization and what to expect when you volunteer.

GRE Workshop Opportunity, Spring 2017

The Graduate College encourages students to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) through formal or informal instruction and study, as appropriate to the individual. For those students seeking professional assistance, one option to consider is a workshop led by Michael Flynn, Executive Director of Grad Pros Educational Consulting. Mr. Flynn has facilitated GRE workshops on the UA campus since 2000 and has received consistently positive feedback.

There are three components to this workshop.

1. Practice tests: The course begins with a GRE practice test administered under simulated test conditions. Scores will be analyzed to determine areas of strength and weakness for each participant. One additional practice test will be taken in class, and another will be taken at home to familiarize students with the GRE's computer format.
2. Group instruction: Test-taking strategies for the quantitative, verbal and writing sections of the GRE will be covered along with time management, stress/anxiety and other topics relating to test performance. Timed sections will be administered to assess individual strengths/weaknesses and to improve pacing.
3. Extra help from the instructor: The instructor, Michael Flynn, is Executive Director of Grad Pros Educational Consulting and former admissions committee member at Harvard University and the UCSD School of Medicine. Extra help will be available during and after the workshop.

Dates

The Spring 2017 workshop is designed to be completed over 4 days, as noted below. As new material is presented in each class, students need to commit to attending all four days of the workshop. The workshop is held on the UA campus.

• Saturday, February 4,  9am - 5pm
• Sunday, February 5,  9am - 1pm
• Saturday, March 4,  9am - 5pm
• Sunday, March 5,  9am - 1pm

 Cost

The cost of the workshop is $300, which includes all instruction, a GRE practice book and extra help both during and after the workshop.

To request a seat in the workshop, please contact Michael Flynn by email: gradpros@gmail.com (link sends e-mail). In addition to your full name and phone number, please include the following information about your affiliation with UA and your plans to take the GRE:

• Current UA students: indicate your year in school (junior, senior, graduate student, etc) and expected GRE test date. Note: you may be asked to show your UA Cat Card at the first workshop.
• UA alumni: indicate your graduation date and expected GRE test date.
• UA staff: indicate your title, department, and expected GRE test date.
• Community members: indicate your expected GRE test date.

 Class size is limited and registration is prioritized in the order indicated above. Please consider the interests of others and only request a seat in the workshop if you can fully commit to attending all four scheduled class meetings and plan to take the GRE soon after completing the workshop (within a month or so).
